4 Reasons You Can’t Lose Weight

#1. Your Current Weight: Your body mass is an important determinant for how quickly you lose weight. It actually works in reverse: the more body weight you have, the easier it is to lose. If you are trying to lose those last few pounds, they can be very sticky. This doesn’t mean you should gain weight before you lose it, but you need to be patient as weight comes off: the more you lose, the harder it will be.
#2. Your Lifestyle: Some people have lots of time to devote to lifestyle changes, others don’t. Remember that stress and sleep are a big part of weight loss – if you are running around and not getting enough sleep, this too can slow down (or stop) your weight loss. The more time you devote to exercising, sleeping, relaxing, and eating well, the more weight you will lose.
#3. Your Muscle Mass: You’ve heard me say it many times, your muscle mass means a lot to your weight loss. Men typically have more muscle than women, so they often lose weight much easier. When you are thinking about a weight loss program, consider exercising to build muscle: this can be as simple as walking or even adding weight training to your exercise regimen.
Your Hormonal Health: There are four hormones important for weight loss: ghrelin, leptin, cortisol, and adiponectin. These hormones can either help or hurt you in your weight loss efforts. Ghrelin is a hormone made in the stomach that tells our body we are full. Leptin is made in our fat cells and blocks hunger. Adiponectin is also produced by fat cells, but it helps to regulate blood sugar and the burning of fats. Cortisol is the “stress” hormone that causes us to gain weight.
Balancing hormones is the key to quick weight loss.
