From the Mailbag: Toenail Fungus and Algae in Hydrogen Water
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
You’ve got questions…
We’ve got answers!
Today, we’ve got a very important question about toe fungus and another about algae growth in drinking water.
Let’s dive in…
I have a toenail fungus on both of my big toes. I’ve tried prescription topicals but can’t seem to get rid of it. Is this normal? How did I get it? Do you have any natural solutions that might help me be toenail fungus-free?
Thanks for asking such a great question, George.
Toenail fungus, also called onychomycosis, is a chronic and troublesome for many folks. In fact, it’s so common there are more than 3 million cases in the U.S. every year. And many more go undiagnosed.
Toenail fungus isn’t caused by a specific fungus. Many different types of fungi can ignite the infection by entering your nails through small cracks in the nail or surrounding skin. The fungus will discolor your nails (brown, yellow or white) and make them thick, brittle and cracked.
Anyone can have a bout with toenail fungus, but some folks are more likely to get it than others. Those with diabetes, circulation problems or a weakened immune system are at greater risk.
Treatments for toenail fungus range from prescription nail polishes to oral antifungal medications. It can take up to a year for the infection to go away, even with medical treatment.
One natural way to combat toe fungus is with olive leaf extract.
Because of its strong antimicrobial powers, it can help kill yeast and other fungi in your system. Not to mention olive leaf extract can boost your immune system and offers antibacterial support as well, both key factors to fighting infections.
The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends taking 250–500mg capsules one–three times daily for immune system support.

Algae Growth in Hydrogen Water
We’ve used the Turapür pitcher for a while. We love the hydrogen water and the amazing way it makes us feel, but we’ve run into a bit of a snag.
When we first started using the pitcher, we filled it with tap water and got amazing, great-tasting hydrogen water. Then we decided to use water that had been through our filtration system so that our water would be even better. But once we made the switch, we noticed green algae was growing in our Turapür pitcher. We quickly switched back to using tap water and never saw another growth.
Do you know what could’ve caused this?
Great question, Mark.
I turned this one over to the hydrogen water experts at H2 Healthy Living (www.H2healthyliving.com) for a well-informed answer. Here’s what they had to say:
We’ve never heard anything like that before.
Lots of folks use filtered water in their Turapür pitchers and never experience algae growth.
Water filtration systems should remove any dissolved solid matter from the water. This includes things like minerals and salts but can also include organic matter like algae. Obviously, that is not true for this customer. Their current filter must be contaminated.
We suggest changing your water filter. It’s likely this will clear up the issue. If this doesn’t work, you could contact the company that makes your filters and see if they have a solution.
In the meantime, your reader can still enjoy the many benefits of hydrogen water from their Turapür pitcher, but we recommend they only use water from the tap in it until the filter problem is solved.
Thanks to the team over at H2 Healthy Living for helping us out with this questions.
Another way to reap all of the amazing health benefits of hydrogen water for yourself is with the Turapür countertop system. This filter can be easily installed directly to your kitchen sink which means you can get hydrogen rich water straight from the tap.
The Turapür countertop system has two stages of filtration. The first stage reduces bad tastes and odors. The second stage passes the water through special minerals including magnesium and tourmaline, which produces molecular hydrogen and reduce the oxidation potential in the water — making it a powerful antioxidant. Research suggests antioxidants can help give you energy, generate radiant skin and even help keep your joints healthy.
