[Alert] These 6 Conditions STEAL Your Vitamin D

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

You probably see news about vitamin D all the time… and that’s for good reason!

Because when it comes to VITAL nutrients, vitamin D is about as close as you can get to a miracle.

When you have healthy levels, it protects you from bone loss and fractures, strengthens your immune system, keeps your waistline trim, and even keeps you safe from depression, cancer, and heart disease.

There’s one problem: there are 6 conditions that STEAL your vitamin D.

And this leaves you vulnerable to MORE diseases when you’re already down for the count.

Here are the 6 conditions you should be on the lookout for. If you suffer from any of them, request your vitamin D levels be tested at your next doctor’s appointment.

  • Digestive diseases. Conditions such as celiac disease, chronic pancreatitis, Crohn’s disease, cystic fibrosis, and irritable bowel syndrome all affect the intestines, keeping your body from absorbing nutrients. If you suffer from chronic bouts of diarrhea, you could especially be at risk.
  • Being overweight. Having a body mass index (BMI) higher than 30 can put you at risk for low levels of vitamin D. Subcutaneous body fat can trap vitamin D, which is why deficiency is a greater concern in those who are obese.
  • Liver or kidney disease. Both conditions change how your body processes vitamin D. The kidneys are needed to activate vitamin D, so if they’re not performing like they should, they’re putting you at risk. Studies have also shown that some liver diseases make it hard to absorb fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin D.
  • Cancer treatments. Radiation cancer treatment can make it harder for the intestines to absorb vitamin D, but many chemotherapy drugs also destroy your body’s ability to absorb nutrients.
  • Weight loss surgery. Bypass surgeries do just that: they bypass. And in this case, the part of your digestive tract where Vitamin D is absorbed is being redirected, so your body’s natural vitamin-absorbing process is affected.
  • Certain medications. The worst offenders are oral steroids, Orlistat (a weight loss drug), statins (cholesterol drugs), and diuretics (water pills).

But don’t lose hope—just because you have low levels doesn’t mean they’re stuck there forever.

The most natural way to get vitamin D is sun exposure: when the sun hits our skin, it creates vitamin D. But getting enough sun can be a problem.

Your best bet is to supplement to make sure you’re getting enough. You can also eat more fish, egg yolks, pumpkin seeds, almonds, and avocados to boost your levels and get the full benefits of this life-saving vitamin.

P.S. Vitamin D doesn’t just PROTECT you from cancer… it can also fight it. Read more about its cancer-defeating activity right here.
