Are These Drugs Making Your Blood Pressure WORSE?
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
I’ve talked till I’m blue in the face about how high cholesterol is no big deal for most people.
High blood pressure (hypertension), however, is a HUGE PROBLEM… and you want to take get your blood pressure under control as best you can.
Having uncontrolled high blood pressure increases your risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and vision problems.
That means you have to look out for drugs you’re taking that can increase your blood pressure.
But what happens when the drugs your doctor prescribes you are hurting you instead of helping?
A recent study discovered that this mainstream drug could make your blood pressure WORSE.
There are a few situations when you need to be extra cautious about prescription drugs: you’ve been taking the same drug for a long time, you take multiple prescriptions, or you see more than one doctor.
Now, you can add having high blood pressure to the list.
A recent study in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine revealed that 18.5 percent of hypertension patients were taking a medication that increased their blood pressure.
The researchers reviewed nine years of data from a largescale study called the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), and found that patients were on many blood pressure-increasing drugs, including:
- antidepressants,
- prescription-strength non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs),
- steroids,
- hormonal medications,
- decongestants,
- and weight-loss pills.
Even worse, the researchers found that patients were often needing HIGHER doses of hypertension drugs to keep their blood pressure under control.
Doctors are busy people, and they often don’t have the time to fully review all of your medications. This means, unfairly, that YOU have to do it.
One of your best resources is your local pharmacists – they specialize in knowing drug interactions and often have the time to help you find which drugs you shouldn’t be taking.
P.S. Lowering your blood pressure naturally is easy thanks to this dual-purpose veggie. Read all about it right here.
