Here’s the TRUTH About This So-Called Superfood

Q: I saw a story on the news the other day about how good chocolate is supposed to be for us. But I’m having a really hard time believing it. Is chocolate something you recommend? — Maria F.

A: Everyone wants chocolate to be a health food – including me.

But you’re right to be skeptical. Just follow the money. 

Companies like Mars, Nestle, Hershey have dumped millions of dollars into scientific studies that investigate the health benefits of chocolate.

The Mars company, alone, has supported 140 studies since 2005–almost all of which (no surprise) have come out positive for chocolate.

Is “Big Chocolate’s” money well spent? Yes: Chocolate sales are soaring.

How about foods that have no marketing to support their health benefits?

Broccoli, garlic, and medical mushrooms have no Madison Avenue ad blitz to support them–so you rarely hear about their health benefits. 

Yet, if you are looking for powerful nutrients that put chocolate to shame–broccoli, garlic, and medical mushrooms are the first place to look.

I’m not going to say you should avoid chocolate entirely.

But chocolate is not your magic cure. Don’t expect chocolate you buy in the store to improve your heart, your brain, or your digestion on its own.  

That’s because all the studies on chocolate use a super-concentrated cocoa (not a chocolate bar). Those super-concentrated cocoa extracts have a ton of flavanols and other phytonutrients.  

Flavanols are indeed good for you.

But guess what? Most of the flavanols disappear when you process cocoa.

To get enough flavanols to match most studies, you typically have to eat a ton of chocolate (about 40 ounces of milk chocolate–that is around 250 Hershey’s kisses and almost 6,000 calories every day).

Here is the kicker, flavanols are much more abundant elsewhere (lettuce, tomatoes, almonds, and berries).

There are much healthier foods than chocolate.

I prefer to use chocolate as an every-once-and-a-while treat and use a superfood blend to make sure I’m getting all the powerful plant nutrients my body needs. The blend I use is Spectrum Elite, from Gold Leaf Nutritionals, the supplement company I work with.
