Mailbag: A Post-Prostate Cancer Blueprint for a Better Recovery
“My son just got his prostate removed because of cancer. He is doing well and recovering.
My question is there any information you can forward with regards to his lifestyle? Are there things he should not eat, things he should be eating, is social drinking a risk, any vitamins that should be on his list?
My dream is that he lives a full and healthy life, so any info you can pass on would be most helpful.”
Grateful Mom
Dear Grateful,
Your care and concern for your son’s recovery and future health really shine through. It’s terrific that you’re helping him explore natural ways to support his long-term health after prostate cancer treatment.
Let’s look at some research-backed approaches that I’ve recommended to my patients to support recovery and ongoing wellness after a cancer diagnosis:
Cancer-fighting foods:
- Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts)
- Cooked tomatoes (rich in lycopene)
- Wild-caught fish (for inflammation-fighting omega-3s)
- Pomegranates (shown to support prostate health)
- Green tea (packed with protective compounds)
Foods to limit or avoid:
- Processed meats (sorry, bacon lovers!)
- Excess dairy (especially non-organic)
- Refined sugars and processed foods
- Deep-fried foods
- Artificial additives and preservatives
Supportive supplements:
- Vitamin D3 (crucial for immune function)
- Zinc (vital for prostate health)
- Selenium (supports DNA repair)
- Modified citrus pectin (promising research for prostate health)
- Curcumin with black pepper (a potent anti-inflammatory)
Lifestyle tweaks:
- Regular exercise (gentle during recovery)
- Stress management (chronic stress impacts immune function)
- Adequate sleep (crucial for healing)
- Regular check-ups and PSA monitoring
- Maintaining a healthy weight
When someone is recovering from prostate cancer, they should skip alcohol or keep their use minimal. An occasional glass of wine might be okay. However, keep in mind that alcohol raises inflammation and could interfere with immune function.
I explain to my patients that they should think of the months (and even years) after beating cancer as a time to rebuild their foundation. Each healthy choice that’s made at this time is an investment in long-term well-being.
Always check with your healthcare team before starting new supplements, as some can interact with medications or treatments.
Providing support and encouragement while a loved one recovers from cancer is invaluable. I wish him continued recovery and many healthy years ahead!
P.S. This cancer-fighting superstar is hiding in plain sight in your kitchen.
