"Opposites" Trick Slashes Alzheimer's Risk

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

Mainstream medicine is on a misguided mission. They want us to FEAR fat. And unfortunately, it’s working.

Because instead of improving our health, this fear is backfiring on us in more ways than one. As a nation, we’re overweight, sick, and suffering in record numbers from heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and Alzheimer’s.

And that last one may be the MOST concerning of all. Because unlike many other diseases of aging, we still don’t entirely understand what causes Alzheimer’s.

We have no effective prescription medications to treat the disease. And cases are on the rise.

Today I’m going to reveal a HUGE mistake conventional medicine is making when addressing Alzheimer’s. Hint… it has something to do with FAT.

An estimated 6.5 MILLION people over 65 are already living with Alzheimer’s. And experts predict that the number will more than double by 2060.

So avoiding anything that raises your personal risk of developing the disease (or accelerating its symptoms) is vital. And it turns out that giving in to a fear of fat might be doing exactly that.

In fact, according to one study, to have the best chance of beating Alzheimer’s, you’re going to have to do the OPPOSITE of what the mainstream insists you should.

In a study by the Society for Neuroscience, researchers uncovered a surprising way to fight back against the disease. Eat MORE fat.

I know it sounds strange (and, let’s be honest, almost too good to be true), so let me explain.

You see, your body runs on two forms of energy: sugar (glucose) and ketones.

We’re all familiar with sugar, of course. Ketones are another story. They’re a more efficient fuel than glucose. Your liver produces these chemicals when it breaks down fats.

But according to researchers, that’s not where their job ends. Because your brain LOVES ketones.

A low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diet…

  • decreases oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain
  • increases the number of mitochondria (energy factories) in your brain
  • rebuilds and protects your neurotransmitters (the chemical messengers that carry signals between your cells)

When your ketone levels fall, so does the amount of a vital protein called SIRT3. This compound is one of the last lines of defense when protecting your brain from Alzheimer’s.

But the low-fat, high-carb (sugar) diet pushed by the mainstream robs your body of the chance to produce and use ketones for energy. And this leads to lower levels of protective SIRT3 proteins and potentially failing memory as a result.

In the study, when researchers put mice with low SIRT3 levels on a ketogenic diet, their SIRT3 SHOT up, and they ended up living longer.

But the evidence for the brain benefits of a high-fat, low-carb diet doesn’t stop there.

Studies have found that giving ketones to Alzheimer’s patients improves their symptoms. And this, of course, is because their brain is getting the non-sugar energy source it’s been craving all along!

This means high-fat, low-carb eating – like the keto diet – benefits Alzheimer’s patients AND folks who want to PREVENT the disease.

P.S. Dialing down the sugar in your diet and embracing fat can help in the fight against cancer TOO. I’ve got all the incredible details here.
