3 Tips to Avoid Travel Constipation
It’s that time of year when we pile into our car, punch in a distant location, and point ourselves toward our summer vacation destination.
But, all too often, an uninvited guest is coming along for the ride…. travel constipation.
It’s like your bowels decide to go on strike the moment you step out of your comfort zone. But WHY? And what can you do about it?
Many culprits conspire against your poor digestive system, leading to constipation when you’re on the road, starting with dehydration.
On vacation, you’re so busy exploring and having a grand old time that you forget to drink enough water. And when you’re dehydrated, your body isn’t going to “let you go without a fight.
Next up is the whole sitting situation. You’re stuck, barely moving a muscle in planes, trains, or automobiles for hours on end.
Your gut’s thinking, “Hey, if you’re not going to move, neither am I!” And so, the constipation begins.
And don’t overlook the impact a time zone change can have. If you’re vacationing in a place with a different standard time than home, your body’s internal clock is off. That can wreak havoc on your digestion, triggering a mean case of constipation.
Let’s also not forget the food factor. You’re eating at odd hours, indulging in cuisine that your tummy isn’t used to, and probably stuffing your face with more than your fair share of greasy, processed junk. No wonder your intestines are staging a revolt!
However, three simple steps can help you AVOID becoming a victim of travel constipation.
- For starters, make a conscious effort to stay hydrated. Carry a water bottle with you everywhere and sip on it like your life depends on it because, let’s face it, your bowel movements sure do!
- Take breaks from sitting to stretch your legs and get blood flowing. If you’re on a plane or train, get up and walk the aisle. If you’re in a car, pull into some of those rest stops you usually avoid. Your travel time might go up a bit, but preventing the misery of constipation when you get there is well worth the investment.
- I get it. You’re on vacation, so you’re going to indulge. But stick to a somewhat regular eating schedule when you do. Also, pack some fiber-rich snacks to munch on throughout the day to keep things moving along.
Remember, your gut’s NOT trying to ruin your vacation. It’s just a little out of sorts. However, following these three steps could help you avoid battling constipation as a result.
