Mailbag! You Won’t Believe This Omega-3 Trick
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
You’ve got questions…
We’ve got answers!
Today we’re going to address a popular question among our readers — what is the best source of omega-3 fatty acids, and how can you get these important nutrients affordably?
Let’s dive in…
Hey Natalie,
I know omega-3 fatty acids are good for my brain and heart. And I keep hearing how salmon is such a good source of omega-3s. But have you seen salmon prices lately? What else can I try?
Thanks,
Harold M.
Good question, Harold.
And you’re right — salmon is a fantastic source of omega-3s. But you don’t have to break the bank to get it.
In fact, according to the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Nutrient Database, fresh and canned salmon have roughly the same fatty acid and nutrient content. So there’s really no difference between the two when it comes to omega-3 levels.
And that’s really good news for many folks, since canned salmon is a lot cheaper and really easy to get your hands on.
Plus, canned salmon comes with a few nutritional bonuses.
Most canned salmon is wild-caught and not farm-raised. Wild-caught salmon are considered healthier than farm-raised fish because they’re less likely to contain dangerous pollutants like mercury and PCBs. Plus, it has a longer shelf life and can retain most of its nutrients for an extended period, especially when packed in oil.
The only downside is that some folks think canned salmon has a more pungent taste and odor.
Fresh salmon may taste better to some but is more likely to be farm-raised than canned. It’s important to check the labels or ask your local market where the fish came from if you want to avoid pollutants.
And of course, a really convenient way to get concentrated omega-3s without the worry of pollutants is through supplements.
High-quality fish oil supplements go through a purification process called molecular distillation, which removes heavy metals and other toxins to below detectable levels. Plus, you can get a healthy dose of omega-3s without the hassle or stench of preparing fish.
Luckily, Gold Leaf Nutritionals (which is affiliated with Living Well Daily) offers a high-quality, molecularly distilled fish oil supplement.
It’s called UltraOmega and it comes from a member of an organization with higher purity standards than the FDA, the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s, or GOED. GOED sets strict standards for concentration and freshness and limits for any toxic heavy metals and other contaminants.
In fact, our fish oil is so top-notch, it’s been awarded the rare 5-Star certification from the International Fish Oil Standards program.
