Mailbag! Aspirin Fails Millions of Heart Patients
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
You’ve got questions…
We’ve got answers!
For years, the mainstream has been pushing aspirin as a cure-all for anything that ails your heart.
But now we know this simply isn’t true.
Because according to some brand-new research from the University of Florida, aspirin does pretty much NOTHING for the millions of folks struggling with a certain heart condition.
Let’s dive in…
Hi Natalie,
My doctor put me on aspirin about 12 years ago because of the plaque in my arteries. I’ve been taking it ever since, but lately I’ve been wondering if it’s doing any good (and I know it can cause bleeding issues). Am I just being paranoid?
Thanks,
Billie K.
Great question, Billie.
And you’re not alone. Many folks have been taking aspirin for years in hopes it will lower their risk of heart troubles like stroke and heart attack.
But according to brand-new research published in the journal Clinical Cardiology, the millions of folks suffering from atherosclerosis — stiff, narrow arteries— get little or no benefit from taking daily aspirin.
For the study, researchers meticulously tracked the health records of over 33,000 patients diagnosed with atherosclerosis who were also taking daily aspirin. Some had suffered from heart attack or stroke and the others had no prior heart attack or stroke.
After crunching the numbers, the researchers made a shocking discovery…
Aspirin only “marginally lowered” the risk of death from heart issues in those who had suffered from a previous heart attack or stroke.
Even worse, aspirin had ZERO effect on the folks who never had a heart attack or stroke.
And you’re right — aspirin can up your chances of experiencing bleeding in important organs like your stomach or brain.
So in short, taking aspirin every day does practically nothing to protect you from dying from heart problems if you have stiff arteries and increases your risk of suffering from serious health problems.
If you’re taking aspirin and have atherosclerosis, you should talk to your doc about getting off of it.
