Mailbag! The Secret Poison in Our Food

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

You’ve got questions…

We’ve got answers!

We all know that canned food isn’t as good as the real stuff — it doesn’t taste as good, has less nutrients and often come with a truckload of added salt.

But taste and sodium aren’t the only reasons you should be avoiding canned foods.

You see, according to California researchers, many of our canned foods continue to have dangerous levels of bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical that could put you on the fast track to some of today’s top killers.

Let’s dive in…

Hi Natalie,

I know that BPA is really bad for you and has been banned from some products. I keep seeing BPA-free labels on cans and was curious if it’s now banned from canned goods? If not, do you know which foods have the highest levels? Also, are BPA-free cans safer?

Thanks,

Kaye C.

Great question, Kaye.

You are correct. BPA is really bad for you.

It’s linked to all sorts of health problems like reproductive issues, diabetes, obesity, heart disease and even cancer.

Because it’s so hazardous to your health, many countries, including the U.S. (after years of the FDA dragging its feet), have banned it from baby items.

Unfortunately, this nasty chemical is still allowed in the production of all sorts of plastic products like food containers, water bottles, DVDs and, of course, canned foods.

BPA is used in can liners and is quickly absorbed by the food that eventually lands on your dinner plate.

In fact, recent research from the Center for Environmental Health found that nearly 40% of cans from grocers like Kroger and Albertsons had BPA liners.

Even worse, over HALF of the cans tested from thrift stores like 99 Cents Only were positive for BPA.

But the bad news doesn’t end there…

Another study found that canned soups have some of the highest amounts of BPA, with an outrageous 229% higher level than non-canned foods.

Many companies have voluntarily stopped using BPA in their canned goods but have substituted it with another chemical called BPS. Unfortunately, new research shows that BPS might be just as dangerous as BPA.

Any way you slice it, eating canned food has the potential to wreck your health.

So your best bet for not eating a plateful of BPA or BPS is to kick the cans.

Instead, opt for fresh or frozen selections. Not only do they taste better, but they aren’t riddled with BPA or BPS.
