Mailbag! Wonder Vitamin STOPS Alzheimer's
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
You’ve got questions…
We’ve got answers!
It’s no secret that having diabetes puts you at serious risk for Alzheimer’s… or it can make your Alzheimer’s progress faster.
Some scientists even call Alzheimer’s “type 3 diabetes.”
But Chinese researchers have just discovered a simple vitamin that may stop… or even reverse… one of the root causes of Alzheimer’s.
And the best part? It may work particularly well for diabetics.
Let’s dive in…
Hey Natalie,
I have diabetes and my doctor tells me it can cause Alzheimer’s. Are there any vitamins or supplements that can help fight dementia in folks with diabetes?
Thank you,
Mike L.
Great question, Mike.
Many nutrients, vitamins and supplements can help diabetics (and everyone else) fight Alzheimer’s.
However, folic acid (or vitamin B9) has been making headlines recently due to its powerful effect on tau, a dangerous protein that’s one of the key drivers of Alzheimer’s.
In a recent study, researchers split diabetic mice into three groups.
At the completion of the 8-week trial, scientists found that the mice who got the most folic acid had reduced tau growth in regions of the brain linked to Alzheimer’s disease.
It’s as if this wonder vitamin STOPPED the tau in its tracks and shielded brains from further damage… regardless of blood sugar problems.
Better still, another study shows taking just 400 mcg of folic acid daily can significantly improve brain performance and reduce inflammation in folks already suffering from cognitive problems.
This means taking folic acid could even help you after the effects of Alzheimer’s have already started.
You can get more folic acid in your diet by eating foods like beans, lentils, avocados, leafy greens and citrus fruits.
Or you can pick up a folic acid supplement at your local vitamin shop.
