Warning: Popular Drug is Destroying Your Brain
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
If you have Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), you know how crazy it can make you.
It typically strikes in the middle of the night – your legs start to cramp or they feel like there are ants running up and down them.
But before you tell a mainstream doctor about the problem, there’s something you need to know.
There’s a good chance you’ll end up on a risky drug that won’t do a thing for your RLS – but it could do permanent damage to your brain in the process.
Doctors often treat RLS with drugs called dopamine agonists (pramipexole, ropinirole and rotigotine).
And they do this because drugs companies keep pushing these meds as a solution to restless legs.
Dopamine agonists increase a brain chemical called dopamine, which supposedly calms down restless legs.
You are smart enough to know what happens next: these drugs don’t really help much (and the side effects are horrible).
The side effects of these drugs are serious mental conditions such as: impulse-control disorders, schizophrenia, addiction and obsessive-compulsive disorder, and others.
The side effects are so bad that groups are calling for the FDA to issue a black box warning (the most severe) on these drugs.
I wouldn’t hold my breath though; the FDA moves at a snail’s pace (when it does anything at all).
Don’t get me wrong, RLS is nothing to ignore.
When you don’t sleep well, you are setting off a cascade of events that destroy your health: you gain weight, you are moody, you can’t think, and you even shorten your life.
Getting good sleep is one of your more important health goals.
So, you shouldn’t just suffer with RLS — in fact you should actively seek out a cure:
Dr. Scott’s Pathway to Putting Restless Leg Syndrome to Bed:
- Find the triggers: Some people are sensitive to alcohol or caffeine – try to stay away from these for a week or two and see how you feel.
- Supplement with magnesium and potassium: These minerals are very hard to get adequately in your diet and need to be supplemented.
- B vitamins: There are studies suggesting that people with restless legs have a genetic need for more B vitamins.
- Eat salt: I know you’ve been told to stay away from salt your whole life, but your body badly needs the minerals that salt provides. Choose a Himalayan salt or a mined salt for best results.
The cure for RLS is in your hands. Avoid the drugs that don’t work and look for good natural solutions.
Health and Happiness,
