The ONE Vitamin Every Senior Needs

I admit it — choosing what is good for your health can be pretty difficult.

There are thousands of different supplements…

Everyone has advice on what to eat (or not to eat) …

Who knows what is best?

Personally, I let science lead the way.

And when patients ask me which vitamin is most important for your health, I tell them the research is crystal clear.

Because taking this one “super vitamin” every day could end up preserving your independence… and even saving your life.

So, what is the most important vitamin for people over the age of 60?

Let’s look at some statistics:

  • According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation: “One in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 will break a bone because of osteoporosis.”

While a broken bone doesn’t seem like much, it actually is a big deal when you are older.

When you break a bone, you are shortening your life. Studies suggest about 30 percent of elderly people who break a bone are dead within a year.

And that statistic is what leads me to suggest vitamin D as the most important vitamin for you to take as you grow older.

Vitamin D becomes more important as we age because we spend more time indoors and our skin doesn’t absorb sunlight as well.

Vitamin D is an amazing vitamin. It doesn’t stop at just helping bone health, it is also great for your brain, your heart, your mood, your blood sugar, and your immune system.

You should be taking at least 1,000 IU of vitamin D a day, but more than that when it is winter time or if you are not spending any time outdoors.

But let’s not stop at vitamin D — there is so much more you can do for your bone health.

Dr. Scott’s Health Bone Plan:

  • Protein is the forgotten nutrient needed for good bone health. Most proteins will help with bone growth, but collagen is extremely important to build good bones. I take a powered collagen product because collagen is hard to get in our diets.
  • Vitamin K is another necessary and forgotten nutrient that is essential for bone building. Remember, if you are on blood thinners, to check with your doctor when taking vitamin K.
  • Many minerals are also important for bone health, including magnesium, boron, chromium, and calcium.

Seniors need vitamin D every day. Make sure you are incorporating it into your vitamin regimen.
