The Shocking Reason Your Brain is Failing

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

If you’re like a lot of my patients over the years, Alzheimer’s is probably the disease you fear the most.

And, trust me, I get it.

There are a million ways I’d rather die than to slowly lose my brain…. my ability to think and dress myself… and even remember the ones I love.

Our brains are under a constant attack from both outside and inside our bodies. It’s a miracle that our brains last as long as they do – given how much we abuse them.

But you and your brain don’t have to take aging sitting down.

Because it turns out that fixing one health problem could hold the key to keeping your brain sharp well into your golden years.

And I’m going to show you how.

I have a question for you: what do Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and memory problems as you age all have in common?

BLOOD SUGAR.

High blood sugar in the body (and in the brain) has recently been discovered as the key first step in many brain conditions.

The connection between blood sugar and brain health is so strong that some researchers have renamed Alzheimer’s and are now calling it “type3 diabetes.”

Your brain loves sugar. By some estimates, your brain uses 25 percent of all the sugar energy in your body.

But there is a limit to your brain’s sugar-love.

When blood sugar is high in the brain, it increases inflammation – which leads to widespread brain damage.

You can see this in people with type 2 diabetes: they have a 60 percent increased risk of dementia when compared to people with normal blood sugar.

But it is not just people who have diabetes who have a problem with sugar in the brain – it is anyone who is eating a lot of sugar or foods that act like sugar.

Keeping blood sugar as low as possible is your best bet to keeping your brain intact as you age.

So, let’s do it. Here is how you keep your blood sugar under control.

Dr. Scott’s Balanced Blood Sugar Approach:

  • Eat well: This means avoiding processed foods, eating good proteins, and as many veggies as you can. Staying away from sugar, grains, and starchy vegetables also helps. If you are going to eat sugar, then do it near a meal (this slows down the absorption of sugar).
  • Exercise: Don’t feel that you have to run a marathon to be in shape, but walking, golfing, or a game of tennis can all help your body deal with sugar more effectively.
  • Inflammation: Buy some cheap health insurance by taking supplements that keep your inflammation low: I like fish oil, curcumin, and Boswellia.
  • Berberine: This herbal extract is great for the brain and helps to control blood sugar.
  • Chromium: This mineral is also well-known to help control blood sugar.

The key to keeping your brain functioning well into your later years is to act now and take steps to help support your brain.

Health and Happiness,

Scott Olson
