Think You’re Eating Well? This Will Shock You

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

If you’re not taking vitamins or supplements right now, you probably have the same reason I’ve heard from lots of patients.

You’re already eating a pretty healthy diet… and are avoiding the foods that are bad for you.

And, trust me – that’s a GREAT step in the right direction.

But it’s probably not enough.

Because new research shows that 90 percent of Americans are missing at least one vital nutrient that they need to stay healthy and avoid disease.

And the reasons why will probably surprise you.

The United States ranks 40th in the developed world for life expectancy – even though we spend billions of dollars every year on health care.

The reason for our poor health lies in the high rates of diabetes and obesity in the United States – which lead to increases in heart disease and cancer (the two leading killers).

What makes those statistics so maddening is that those conditions are largely preventable through better nutrition and lifestyle changes. Research has shown that somewhere between 60 and 90 percent of disease is preventable through proper nutrition.

But getting proper nutrition in our modern world can be a struggle for all of us.

Let’s look at why:

  • Most people say that they eat well, but research shows that 80 percent of Americans do not eat enough servings of fruits and vegetables.
  • Our soils are lacking nutrients. Long ago, scientists discovered that three minerals (potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus) are the only nutrients needed to help plants grow faster. The rest of the nutrients such as iron, copper, manganese, chromium, zinc and others did not affect growth. The result is that our farmers ignore most nutrients. This leaves our soils –and your food—depleted of vital nutrients.
  • The amount of processed food that we eat has been on a steady climb ever since the invention of the refrigerator. Today, most of us eat more processed food than non-processed food.
  • Our stressful and fast-paced lives increase our needs for nutrients.

What these facts leave us with is one inescapable conclusion: you need to supplement in order to get the nutrients your body needs if you want to stay healthy.

I suggest a good multivitamin, but also make sure you are getting enough vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil).

Getting these three supplements in your medicine cabinet will go a long way to helping you live the long and healthy life you deserve.

Health and Happiness,
