Meet the Latest Drug You Should NEVER Take
It’s happened more times than I can count.
A drug manufacturer develops a new “wonder pill” for a rare condition.
But in a greedy grab for more money, the start pushing it on more and more people.
That’s exactly what’s happening with the drug Nuedexta right now.
And if you’re a senior citizen (or know someone with Alzheimer’s), this is a warning you can’t afford to miss.
Nuedexta is a drug that is approved for pseudobulbar affect (PBA).
If you haven’t heard of PBA, you are not alone.
I had to look it up.
PBA is sudden and uncontrollable laughing or crying that happens in people with brain injury. That brain injury usually comes from an accident or battlefield injury.
Rarely, PBA will happen in people with Alzheimer’s or other dementia.
Let’s look at that closely: a disorder that is so rare, I had to look it up. The most common type of PBA is from traumatic brain injury, but a few people get it from dementia.
Guess where the drug is being pushed and for what condition?
You’re right: the drug is being pushed in nursing homes for people with dementia.
In some nursing homes, 25% of the patients are on this drug.
If a patient yells, cries, is upset (or shows any emotion), they are prescribed Nuedexta.
Agitation is common thing in people with Alzheimer’s, but that doesn’t mean they need a drug for agitation (or that Nuedexta works for agitation).
Nuedexta’s sales force is amazing. They are selling the drug for anyone suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’ disease – even though the drug has never been studied in the elderly.
The sales force claims up to 40% of people with dementia can suffer from PBA–even though THERE ARE NO studies to support this (real studies show PBA occurs in less than 5% of these patients).
The government has joined in and Medicare is spending $138 million on Nuedexta–an increase of over 400% from just three years earlier.
What is crazy is that Nuedexta’s ingredients (a heart medication and a cough suppressant) used to be made by compounding pharmacies for less than $1. It now costs $12.60 a pill.
Nuedexta also comes with a long list of side effects (like most drugs). It can cause severe dizziness or diarrhea, which can be a dangerous (or even fatal) combination for frail folks in nursing homes.
When most people think about selling a worthless drug that can harm helpless elderly, they are repulsed.
Not Big Pharma and their sales team.
If you have relatives in nursing homes, make sure you look out for them and keep them away from this drug.
