How to STARVE Brain Cancer

Medulloblastoma is one of the most common brain cancers around.

It especially strikes children… and it’s horrible.

Maybe you have a grandchild who has been affected (I pray not) or know someone who does.

The most common treatment strategy includes surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Even if this treatment works (which it often does not), it leaves kids with significant side effects (that include mental and physical disabilities).

But what if we could stop this cancer (and other cancers) by just starving them of the fuel they need?

That is what a new study suggests is the best path for treating cancer.

Cancer cells, while deadly, are broken cells (they don’t work very well).

Normal cells in your body have a lot of options for fueling themselves. Cancer cells do not.

One hallmark of all cancer cells is damaged mitochondria – the powerhouses of the cells. These damaged mitochondria can only get the fuel they need from limited sources.

A new study, at the Queen Mary University of London published in the journal Genes & Development, looked at brain cancer (medulloblastoma) and what processes allowed the cancer to grow and thrive.

Turns out that these cancer cells are addicted to glutamine (an amino acid) and sugar.

Deprive the cancer of those two fuels and they shrivel up and die.

Normal cells turn glucose into energy by a process using oxygen (called cellular respiration). The broken mitochondria in cancer cells use fermentation of sugar (glucose) instead of the process most cells use to create energy.

So, you would think removing sugar would destroy the cancer cells, but it turns out, cancer cells have an ace up their sleeve.  When sugar disappears, cancer cells use the amino acid glutamine to make energy to survive.

Glutamine is a non-essential amino acid found in high concentrations in meats and grains.

If you can design a diet that is free both of glutamine and sugar, you can freeze cancer in its tracks AND this works not only for brain cancer, but also many other cancers.

Dr. Scott’s Anti-Cancer Diet:

  • Sugar: Staying away from sugar and added sugars is obvious, but you also need to stay away from the foods that act like sugars (this includes fruits, grains, and starchy vegetables).
  • Avoid Glutamine: Dairy, beef, and grains have the highest amount of glutamine. You are not looking to completely remove glutamine, just reduce it.
  • Eat Vegetables: I think your diet should have a lot of vegetables in it, which are loaded with compounds that fight cancer; make sure you get as many as you can.
  • Supplement: Most people don’t get enough nutrients, so it is good to cover your nutritional bases by supplementing. I think everyone should take a multivitamin, an omega-3 fatty acid, and a probiotic.

It has long been known that a high sugar diet increases cancer risk. The removal of glutamine is another key in the puzzle.
