That Annual Check-Up Could KILL You!
Maybe you get a postcard or an email… or, these days, even a text message.
Time for your annual doctor’s visit.
What could be the harm in swinging by your doctor’s office for a yearly check-up?
Well, there might be a lot more harm than you think.
The risks could be dangerous… or downright deadly.
And you’ll never believe why.
In a new study published in the March issue of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, researchers found that well-child visits (yearly visits) translated into an increased probability of a flu-like illness in children (AND their families) in the following two weeks by 3.2%.
While 3.2% does not sound like much, that amounts to over 700,000 illnesses (some of which end badly) that didn’t need to happen.
Why?
Because you are mixing sick people with healthy people and the strains of illnesses in clinics and hospitals are much worse than those in the wild.
The study focused on children and their caregivers, but the same is true for anyone who goes for a yearly exam or to the doctor’s when they don’t need to.
Yearly exams can lead to potentially deadly illnesses (even flu can be pretty lethal to seniors), and they also result in a lot of unnecessary care.
In 2010, the Institute of Medicine issued a report stating that unnecessary exams and tests accounted for 30% of health-care spending (or some $750 billion a year!).
Extra tests and exams are like upselling at your local oil change place (go in for an oil change and you’ve suddenly spent hundreds of dollars on things you didn’t know you needed).
All of this puts a big question mark in front of any decision to go see a doctor.
The key to reducing unwanted infections and unnecessary procedures is to only go to the doc when you need to — and learning to take care of yourself with natural medicine.
