Is Your Liver at RISK?

When I was in medical school, we had a hard rule when it came to taking tests: if you didn’t know the answer… always choose the liver.

That’s because your liver is the center of your body’s functions.

It cleans your blood, stores energy, helps digest foods, and produces many of the chemicals necessary for you to stay health.

The only problem? Most of us can’t even point to where our liver is…  much less know signs of liver trouble.

So, today I’m going to tell you EXACLTY how to tell if your liver is at risk… and how to get your liver in tip-top shape.

There are many things that can harm your liver, but you should be especially watchful if you have had a hepatitis in the past, are a heavy drinker, or have family history of liver disease.

Here’s what to look for:

Eyes: Your eyes are one of the obvious places to look for advanced liver disease. The white part of your eyes turns yellow when your liver is not working right. This is due to a chemical called bilirubin that builds up in the blood when the liver fails.

Stomach: We’ve all had bloating – where your belly feels full. But when the liver fails, your stomach fills up with fluid. You can suspect this when it lasts for a long time and it feel more solid than gas.

Skin: When your liver is in bad shape, it can cause you to itch all over. If you have been consistently itchy, you should ask your doctor about it.

Fatigue: Feeling tired all the time is another common symptom of liver disease.

And here’s how to keep your liver in tip-top shape.

Dr. Scott’s Healthy Liver Plan

  • Reduce Harmful Chemicals: The liver detoxifies everything that enters your body. You can drop the liver’s workload by staying away from processed foods, artificial flavors, artificial coloring, trans fats and stop drinking alcohol or illicit drugs, or chemical cleaning products. Many prescription drugs also place a burden on the liver. Talk to you doc about reducing these, too.
  • Eat Right: Choose a diet that’s high in vegetables and good quality proteins (meats and nuts). Vegetables contain many of the nutrients the liver needs to function correctly. Some of the best foods for the liver are broccoli, leafy green vegetables, and garlic.
  • Support Liver Function: The liver’s detoxification pathways require specific nutrients to run efficiently. Most of the vitamins the liver needs are B vitamins but also amino acids such as glutamine, N-Acetyl Cysteine, methionine, and others. Many herbs support the natural detoxification of the liver, but milk thistle, turmeric, and beet root are the best.
