“Hidden Fat” Is WRECKING Your Health
For some of us, few things show our age like our weight.
It seems like with every passing year your spare tire gets a little more inflated… and your pants sizes just keeps climbing.
Or maybe you’re one of the lucky ones who can still wear their high school size.
But no matter where you land on the scale, you could be carrying a HIDDEN type of fat that can WRECK your health.
And it’s especially dangerous for women.
Here’s how to identify it.
I’m talking about visceral fat – the type that sticks to your stomach and surrounds your abdominal organs.
Researchers have long suspected this type of fat can make your sick… but now there’s science to back it up.
A new study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, examined visceral fat and health outcomes in more than 325,000 people.
At the end, the researchers found that for every 2.2 pounds of visceral fat a woman carries… your risk for diabetes and heart disease increases SEVEN TIMES.
If you’re carrying an extra 4.4 pounds of visceral fat, you have 14 times more increased risk of damaging your health.
The researchers also found men have increased risk, but for every 2.2 pounds of added visceral fat, their risk “only” doubled.
Experts report visceral fat is so damaging because it produces hormones that increase disease-causing inflammation.
To get an accurate measurement of your visceral fat, you’d need a costly CT scan.
But you don’t have to go to that trouble or expense to get an idea if your health is in trouble.
An easy way to measure visceral fat levels is by looking at your belly and waist size. If it’s protruding, you likely have visceral fat.
You can also calculate your waist-to-hip ratio by dividing your waist measurement by your hip measurement.
For men, a waist-to-hip ratio of above 1 is high.
For women, a waist-to-hip ratio of above 0.85 is high.
If you find your number to be higher than you like, you can start losing your visceral fat by giving up the foods – like sugars and carbs– that cause it.
