According to groundbreaking new research, we now know that being lonely can RUIN your health.
In fact, it can speed you to an untimely death.
A new study from the Copenhagen University Hospital followed 13,443 people for one year after they were diagnosed with a heart attack, abnormal heart rhythm, valve disease, or heart failure.
What they found speaks for itself:
- Women without friends were three times more likely to die just a year after being released from the hospital.
- Men without friends were two times more likely to die after being released, and even saw their chance of a second heart attack rise by almost 40 PERCENT!
This happens because loneliness damages our body’s hormones, immune function, and mental functioning as badly as obesity, smoking, and drinking.
And it gets worse…
Another recent study, this time published in the journal Heart, shows that loneliness increased the risk of death by 114 percent for men and 192 percent for women!
But while all of this sounds depressing in itself, there’s a bright side. Loneliness can be fixed—it’s just a matter of taking charge of your situation.
The best thing a lonely person can do is volunteer. Not only does volunteering connect you to other people, but it also helps you feel better about yourself.
Start by checking the bulletin board at your church or local community center. Lots of organizations need help and are always looking for volunteers.
Another way to reach out is to take up a new hobby. Your local library can be a good resource for this, as many libraries offer free classes on everything from tai chi to knitting.
