COVID-19: The REAL Symptoms to Watch for

Dear Reader,

It seems like everywhere you turn you find yourself face to face with the word: coronavirus.

And with all the hype and constant media coverage, the amount of information is downright overwhelming.

With all the conflicting information from so-called experts to your Aunt Mabel’s neighbor, it can be hard to know what the truth is.

It is important to know the real symptoms because heading to your doctor may be the worst thing you can do. And with most doctor offices closing their doors and pushing virtual visits only, your options may be limited to an urgent care center, or worse, the ER.

In other words, you’d be walking right into the epicenter of the infection.

So before find yourself heading into the lion’s den, here are are the symptoms you need to look for…

Shortness of breath is what makes COVID-19 stand out as different from allergies, the flu, and the common cold.

Add in a high fever and cough and you are now in the “likely” category for having COVID-19.

But shortness of breath is harder to determine than you might think.

That is because anxiety and panic attacks (which can happen to anyone thinking they might have the virus) can also cause shortness of breath.

Even the common flu can cause people’s lungs to hurt.

Shortness of breath (or dyspnea) is described as tightness in the chest. It occurs when lungs are not getting enough air.

You’ll notice you have shortness of breath if you have trouble performing normal tasks. Tasks that wouldn’t normally require you to breathe harder (climbing stairs, walking around the block, cleaning…).

Some patients with COVID-19 report having to breathe hard when simply getting up and going to the bathroom – but that is often late in the disease. You will probably first notice shortness of breath when doing something active.

If it’s harder to breathe during those activities, then you need to be checked out.

In fact, ANY shortness of breath that lasts more than a brief amount of time should be investigated by a doctor or caregiver.

It is important to note that COVID-19 also comes with muscle pain and fatigue (and sometimes diarrhea and pinkeye).

But some reassuring information to keep in mind as we move through these strange times: about 80 percent of people with the virus are going to be fine.
