[COVID-19]: How Effective Is Your “Protective” Gear?

Dear Reader,

I know you’re probably getting tired of hearing about the new coronavirus. But the fact of the matter is, we have to start looking at the bigger picture of this pandemic.

Because, unfortunately, this is NOT the last time in an infection will roll through the United States.

Hopefully you’ve been practicing social distancing and keeping at least a six-foot space between you and others when you venture out. I bet you are also wearing a mask when you go to the grocery store.

These are all good things.

And while you’re in the store on your quick public adventure, you may have noticed people wearing gloves.

At first, that might seem like a good idea. Keep yourself from touching the virus, right?

But what if I told you wearing gloves may make things worse?

It’s a crazy that going to the grocery store means you have to wear protective equipment!

And you might be tempted to think that adding gloves to your protective anti-virus gear would be a good idea. Especially since you see nurses and doctors wearing them.

But just like masks, people who wear gloves know how to use them. Because yes, believe it or not, there is a right and a WRONG way to wear these gloves.

I know it may sound silly – you think, ‘they are just gloves.’ But medical professionals go through extensive training on how to use and dispose of the gloves they use.

Research into ordinary people using gloves has shown that gloves give people a false sense of security and they do things (like touching their face) with the gloves.

This transfers anything on your glove to your face!

Add to this that gloves also must be removed in a specific manner – to keep the risk of infection down.

Not to mention how and where you dispose of the gloves after you’re finished.

Health scientists also worry that people who wear gloves don’t wash their hands as much.

Have you heard about the studies which shown people drive faster in cars with seatbelts and air bags?

That same theory might be applied to what happens when people wear gloves — they think they are more protected than they actually are.

Your best bet to stay safe is to continue to practice social distancing and wear a mask when you step outside of your home.

Work on any underlying health conditions you have - especially if you are overweight or have diabetes, or heart disease.

If you live in a highly infectious area (like a big city) you might want to wash your clothes when you get home and everything that came from the store.
