COVID-19: Can You Get It Twice?

Dear Reader,

Vaccines (whether you’re anti or pro) are based upon a simple principle:

Once you get a disease your body knows how to fight it… and you won’t get it again.

This type of immunity (called The Adaptive Immune System or the Acquired Immune System) remembers the last time you were infected. And then has soldiers waiting in case the same bug comes your way again.

Despite the overall effectiveness of the Adaptive Immune System, it is NOT perfect.

And sometimes it fails.

Could this be something that is happening with COVID-19?

First, we need to remember that there’s only one thing we know for SURE about COVID-19: and that is the grim fact that we know nothing for sure (yet)

How quickly COVID-19 spreads? How many people die? Can you have it more than once?

ALL of those questions are still up in the air and the data changes daily

Which is why we need to stop and question the reports coming out of China that say 3-10 percent of patients might get COVID-19 twice. (Maybe you’ve seen this in the news?)

See, normally when you get the flu or other infection, your Adaptive Immune System will be prepared.

It comes in and quickly eliminates the invader. But there’s the chance, with COVID-19, that this virus may side-step your immune system’s army.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this happen. But, it’s usually rare.

Now, all of the studies claiming re-infection are coming out of China. But we should be wary about trusting what the Chinese say about infections rates.

If you search world data, you’ll find that China has the best survival rate for COVID-19 of any other nation – which makes more than a few scientists (including me) suspicious.

Worldwide, doctors have dramatically changed the way they are treating patients now in to when this infection first broke out.

They have learned and adapted in order to keep death rates lower. So, it doesn’t exactly make sense that Chinese doctors were more effective than the doctors dealing with the infection now.

This is not to knock Chinese doctors. It’s only to comment that it sometimes takes time to learn the best strategy for a new disease. And the Chinese doctors were the first ones to see the infection.

So, what should you do?

I think it is best to exercise caution with anyone who has had the disease until we learn more.

People may very well be able to get COVID-19 more than once, but it would be rare for this to happen.

Keep practicing social distancing, use a mask, and exercise caution when going out in public. And of course, if you are experiencing any symptoms, consult your doctor.
