Sugar SKYROCKETING Your Risk for These Diseases?!
Dear Reader,
I’ve been fighting a battle against sugar for a long time.
While we’ve all been brainwashed to be afraid of fats, sugar is the real villain in our diets.
People are beginning to see through the lies and realize that sugar leads to weight gain (and weight gain leads to poor health).
But recent research shows the destruction of sugar goes WAY beyond just adding inches to your waistline.
I’ve been encouraged the last few years by the sheer number of studies showing how sugar messes with your metabolic health.
See, when you eat sugar and foods that act like sugar, you send your blood sugar and insulin (the hormone which helps to control sugar) sky high.
Those changes account for health-harming effects we see in diabetics: heart disease, Alzheimer’s, cancers, nerve pain, kidney disease, eye disease….
But, according to a new study published in the journal, Cell Metabolism, ANY diet high in sugar has a negative impact on our health, no matter how much you weigh.
To figure this out, scientists used fruit flies. While you might think fruit flies might not tell you much about human health, they actually do!
When you feed fruit flies a lot of sugar, they become fat and insulin resistance (just like us!) and they die quicker than fruit flies on a lower sugar diet.
For a long time, we thought the health problems with a high-sugar diet were because of metabolic changes like diabetes, high insulin, and inflammation.
But we can now add another factor: an increase in uric acid.
Here’s how researchers found out uric acid was a problem.
The researcher first noticed that fruit flies who were given enough water lived longer lives. This puzzled the study team until they realized that high dietary sugar increases uric acid and when the flies are given enough water, they excreted that uric acid (and live longer).
What the research team discovered was that a buildup of uric acid is the problem and not just the metabolic changes due to insulin, inflammation, and sugar.
Does that mean for every bit of sugar you eat you should drink a lot of water?
YES! You should make sure you are getting enough water.
BUT, does that mean you won’t have health consequences from eating sugar if you chug water all day?
The answer is NO. Even those water-fed flies were still unhealthy, still obese, still had heart problems…
Sugar and the foods that act like sugar are best to be avoided.
