“Japanese Fungus” SLASHES Prostate Cancer 17%

Dear Reader,

Every 17 minutes another man in the US States dies from prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is one of the top cancers in men and its rate is increasing (meaning, more men getting diagnosed and more are dying).

Your chance of developing prostate cancer are one in nine. But that risk climbs up every year you blow out the candles on your birthday cake. It’s another unfortunate downside of getting older.

Fortunately, there’s a “Japanese fungus” that can dramatically drop your risk of prostate cancer.

You just have to add it to your plate.

Most people don’t think of mushrooms too often. Maybe they are in your beef stroganoff, or thrown on a salad — but otherwise, you probably don’t see them in your diet too often.

Well, if you want to SLASH your risk of prostate cancer, that has to change.

In a recent study, published in the International Journal of Cancer, researchers followed 36,499 men between the ages of 40-79 for decades, measuring their mushroom intake and cancer risk.

The researchers discovered eating mushrooms regularly reduced the risk of developing prostate cancer. Even better? This was especially true for men over the age of 50.

However, the risk changed depending on how much you ate.

The men who ate mushrooms just once a week already saw an 8 percent lower prostate cancer risk compared to those who ate mushrooms less than once per week.

But, the guys who consumed mushrooms three or more times a week had a 17 percent lower risk.

What could be behind mushroom’s prostate-fighting superpowers? Well, for starters they are a great source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants.

The most interesting antioxidant is called ergothioneine (or l-ergothioneine) — an amino acid antioxidant that helps drop oxidative stress inside of mitochondria (those tiny powerhouses that produce power for every cell in your body).

Ergothioneine is especially powerful for people with a poor diet and lifestyle choices or those who have exposure to environmental toxins which can lead to chronic inflammation.

The most important thing to know about this study is that they conducted it in Japan – where mushrooms are more part everyday lifestyle, plus the types of mushrooms they eat are quite different than those we normally eat in the United States.

We tend to eat the Crimea Mushroom (they are also called Medium or White Button). Whereas, most common mushroom eaten in Japan is the Shiitake.

Other studies show that Shitake, Maitake, and other mushrooms have many more powerful phytonutrients than Medium mushrooms.

So, go ahead and add those Medium mushrooms to your salad and stroganoff, but look for a way to add some of the more powerful mushrooms to your diet (or take them as a supplement).
