“Foreign Chemical” CAUSING Gluten Sensitivity?!
Dear Reader,
Have you noticed that there has been a tremendous increase in allergies over the last few years?
You used to be able to host a barbecue or a cookout without worrying if someone would have an allergy – peanut, wheat or otherwise.
But these days, you can’t have a bake sale or send treats without considering the ingredients.
Which begs the question: why are there so many allergies?
Well, the full answer is actually very complex, but a new research study has found a certain chemical may be to blame.
Xenoestrogens (“xeno” means foreign) are compounds or chemicals that act like estrogens in your body.
While there is a whole range of problems these Frankenstein-chemicals can cause, they (thanks to new research) may be a clue to why we see a rise in the number of people who are allergic to gluten (the protein found in wheat).
The study, published in the research journal Environmental Research, was the first study to link environment exposure to toxic chemicals and celiac disease.
Celiac disease is a chronic gut condition that leads to nutrient malabsorption, pain, and bloating whenever people eat wheat – or foods that contain gluten.
The study found that young people with higher serum concentrations of a chemical called dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (or DDE) had twice the risk for developing celiac disease.
What’s more, the study found significant gender differences: higher DDE concentrations were associated with a nearly nine-fold increase in celiac disease females.
DDE was not the only chemical to cause an increase in celiac disease: high exposure to perfluorooctane sulfonic acid increased risk over five times, exposure to perfluorooctanoic acid increases risk by almost TEN times and perfluorohexanesulfonate by almost eight times.
Why is this happening?
Natural doctors have long said celiac disease is caused by a “leaky gut,” a problem with the digestive system which allows gluten (specifically the protein called gliadin) to pass across the intestinal wall.
Leaky gut leads to an inflammation reaction which causes all the symptoms of celiac disease.
This study supports this idea: DDE (and other chemicals) rip holes in our digestive systems – leading to leaky gut.
So how can you keep yourself safe from these chemicals?
Well, many of these chemicals can be found in cleaners, pest control products, plastic storage containers, and the lining of non-stick pans.
So I suggest using only cleaners which are organic and do your best to stay away from plastic food storage. Also, a wise move is to use cast iron or stainless steel when cooking.
