Is THIS Making You Vulnerable to Disease?

Dear Reader,

As long as we have had civilizations, we’ve had diseases that sweep through them.

In the Middle Ages, it was the black plague and cholera.

In the early 1900s we saw the Spanish Flue (H1N1).

In the last few years, we’ve seen SARS, EBOLA, and many others…

But why is it that some people get the disease and others don’t?

Here is what we are discovering: you are susceptible to a disease depending on your genetics.

We’ve known for a long time that there are three main factors to how well you handle COVID-19:

  1. Your age
  2. Your sex (men are more susceptible)
  3. And if you have any other chronic disease (diabetes, heart disease, asthma…)

But the BIGGER question in medicine is: why some people get an infectious disease and other people don’t. Or in the case of COVID-19: why some people get really sick and other people only have a mild disease?

With the advent of modern diagnostic tools, geneticists are looking to our DNA for clues.

And here’s what European scientists found: certain sections of our genes are associated with increased risk of respiratory failure in patients with COVID-19. And that increased risk correlates with having type A blood type.

In fact, having type A blood was linked to a 50 percent increase in the likelihood that a patient would need oxygen or going to a ventilator. This isn’t the first time blood type has surfaced as a possible association: Chinese doctors noted the same in an earlier study.

This is puzzling because the coronavirus is known to attach to a protein (called an ACE2 receptor, found in large numbers on our lungs and hearts). But genetic variants for ACE2 receptors did not appear to make a difference in the risk of severe COVID-19.

So naturally, the mystery goes on.

In the meantime, take care of yourself by following my anti-virus program:

  • Eat Well: I like to include lots of garlic and onions in my food during flu season. Onions and garlic have long been used for their healing properties and they are a tasty addition to any meal (especially soups). There are many herbs and vitamins that can help your immune system; make sure you get enough of them.
  • Vitamin D: Take 3,000-5,000 IUs of vitamin D every day.
  • Berberine, Turmeric, and Olive Leaf: These herbs help to give your immune system the boost it needs to help kick the flu out the door.
  • Probiotic/Polyphenols: There is a ton of research on probiotics and immunity. I take my probiotic in a super-food blend so I get both gut health and the added antioxidant power of plant foods.
