Is COVID-19 CAUSING This Disease?

Dear Reader,

There’s no question about it, this virus has surprised us in a lot of ways.

COVID-19 has been one of the more disturbing events to occur in our lifetimes (especially for someone who likes to support the health of others, like myself)

And some days I feel like we are trying to swim against a tsunami

COVID-19 is like many other diseases (such as MERS or SARS or even the common flu), but it also, unfortunately, has its own unique symptoms (like COVID toe rash, loss of smell…) some of which we haven’t even figured out yet

But I never thought a disease could reach as far as this one does…

New evidence suggests that COVID-19 may actually trigger the onset of diabetes in healthy people

We’ve known from almost day one that COVID-19 attacks the most vulnerable among us (people with heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions).

But causing diabetes is a whole different ball game

In a letter, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, a group of seventeen leading diabetes experts suggested there is a connection between COVID-19 and new diabetes cases

Scientists call it a bidirectional relationship  where the virus increases the severity, risk of death fromdiabetes AND can also cause diabetes.

It’s been estimated between 20 and 30 percent of patients who died with COVID were diabetic, but we have yet to determine how many people are coming down with diabetes who didn’t have it before they were infected

Why is this happening?

Unfortunately, the short answer is: no one knows

Scientists suggest that it has something to do with the ACE 2 receptor protein to which COVID-19 attaches

It’s well known that those receptors are found in our lungs and our heart (two organs attacked by the virus), but ACE-2 receptors also found in the pancreas (the pancreas produces insulin to control blood sugar).

We have long known that viral infections may be the reason why people get type one diabetes, but that usually happens to those who are younger.

Right now we’re keeping our eyes and ears open, and that is a plan you should also follow.

If youor someone you know has been infected with COVID, make sure you keep your eyes peeled forthe signs of diabetes. These include increased thirst and hunger, frequent urination, fatigue, andsometimes weight lossblurry visions, cuts and bruises that are slow to heal.

Also be mindful to practice social distancing, wear masks, wash your hands and use hand sanitizer to keep yourself safe and healthy.
