How Hot Temps Could INCREASE the Infection?
Dear Reader,
For years, one of the main worries for architects and building managers is whether a building is warm or cool enough to make the people using said buildings comfortable.
But today that could very well pan out to be an ENOROMOUS problem for anyone who steps inside those buildings.
It is time to take indoor air quality seriously – especially in the era of easily acquired infections.
And now, according to scientists, there’s the possibility that air conditioning may spread the COVID-19 infection – especially across the southern United States.
Now, I’m sure you’ve noticed that there are big debates regarding how COVID-19 is spread. But some of the latest research suggests that it can hang out in the air for a long time.
We all know that diseases such as COVID-19 can be spread through coughing, sneezing, or even talking.
But some researchers think it may be airborne (it travels easily through the air). This happens when the virus floats through the air on small droplets.
If that is true — here’s the bigger problem:
Most air conditioning systems simply recirculate the air present in the building.
That means that everybody who walks into the grocery store, mall, or the building you work in is breathing the SAME stale air.
And summer makes it worse (especially in the southern states).
According to Edward Nardell, professor of medicine and of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, extremely hot temperatures can create situations similar to those in winter where people spend a lot of time indoors.
If it’s true that COVID-19 can travel through air conditioners, we may be in some pretty big trouble.
That being said, the solution is fairly easy: use ultraviolet light as part of the air conditioning system to kill the bacteria and viruses in the air as they pass through the system.
While it is simple, it costs money – so don’t expect your local store or business to spend the cash to fix it.
Also, it’s worth noting that you don’t have to worry about this at home – unless you are living with someone who has the infection.
