COVID-19: Hidden Link in BLOOD?

Dear Reader,

There’s really only one piece of good news when it comes to COVID-19:

The longer it’s around, the more we learn about what it does to our bodies and how we can fight it better.

And recently, researchers have found a surprising link between the virus and our blood.

It’s not what you think… and it might just be a game changer once this all plays out.

Now, there’s been evidence since day one that COVID-19 produces blood clots in our heart, lungs, and kidneys.

And if you’ve been following Living Well Daily for a while now, you’ll remember this discussion about COVID and blood clots from earlier this year. Well now there’s more…

The new study, by Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich published in the journal Circulation, found exactly that: COVID-19 increases clots.

This much we already knew.

But the researchers found that the clots were primarily made up of platelets and activated immune cells called neutrophils (which is unique and doesn’t happen often).

Platelets act as bricks when a blood clot is formed. They essentially build a wall to stop bleeding

Neutrophils, on the other hand, belong to what we call our innate immune system.” Their job is to fight any invading pathogens

So when someone is infected with COVID-19, the neutrophils detect the virus and attract platelets and other clot-forming molecules.

This platelet and neutrophil interaction is a process called immunothrombosis

In the study, they found that those with more severe COVID-19 have more activated neutrophils and platelets… and they had worse outcomes.

Researchers are excited about this study because there may be drugs that could block the activated neutrophils and platelets – but that could also cause other problems.

So once again… your best bet is to keep yourself healthy and lower your risk of getting this virus.

It boils down to social distancing, know who you’re around, eat a low-sugar diet, exercise, and take the right supplements.

P.S. The more information, the better. So if you missed the earlier commentary about the link between COVID-19 and blood clots, you can find it here.
