[MUST-READ] Green Veggie Is VITAL for Your Health!
Dear Reader,
Former president George H.W. Bush was famous for hating broccoli.
And while health officials begged the president to keep his mouth shut about his broccoli disgust, he just couldn’t help himself.
President Bush is not alone – many people despise all broccoli-like vegetables.
If you are one of those people who don’t like broccoli, I have good reasons you should find a way to put it on your plate.
And don’t worry – I’ve got a few tricks to sneak in the benefits if you can’t stand the thought of the green, tree-like vegetable.
While many people can’t stand the thought of broccoli, a new study shows that you should make sure you are getting it in your diet every day.
Why?
The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, found that higher consumption of cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage) is associated with reduced blood vessel disease in older women.
And if you didn’t already know, health of your blood vessels is vital to your health.
As we get older, blood vessel disease can reduce the blood circulating throughout your body and can INCREASE the risk of calcium buildup in your blood vessels (leading to a heart attack).
However, people who eat more cruciferous vegetables have much healthier blood vessels!
Study participants who consumed more than 45g of cruciferous vegetables every day (that is about a ¼ cup of steamed broccoli or ½ cup of raw cabbage), were 46 percent less likely to have extensive build-up of calcium on their aorta (blood vessel near the heart) compared to people who shunned those veggies.
If you are one of those filled with broccoli-hate, it may have something to do with your genes.
There are bitter molecules called glucosinolate compounds in broccoli that not everyone can taste because they simply don’t have the genes.
About 70 percent of people can taste something bitter in broccoli, but people with two copies of bitter–glucosinolate–compound–tasting gene are much more likely to be like George H.W. Bush and hate the taste.
If you are in the broccoli-hating camp, scientists believe that it’s the Vitamin K content of broccoli that makes all the difference.
So if you can’t get in an adequate amount of cruciferous veggies (blending them up in a smoothie even), then you’ll want to make sure you supplement with Vitamin K.
