COVID-19: What Men and Women Need to Know
Dear Reader,
It’s true, many times diseases strike men and women differently.
Besides the obvious diseases like prostate cancer or breast cancer, there are other diseases that harm men and women in a variety of different ways.
For example, research shows that conditions such as osteoporosis, depression, and Alzheimer’s all tend to attack women more. Whereas heart disease, autism, schizophrenia, and substance are more often found in men.
COVID-19 is no different, and so far, research suggests it may have a preference…
Studies show that approximately 60 percent of people who pass from COVID-19 are men.
But why?
Part of the reason for this is the virus uses a receptor called Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (or ACE2) receptor to enter the body. And men have more ACE2 receptors than women.
But that difference doesn’t explain everything.
A research team, publishing their work in the journal Current Hypertension Reports, found that the hormone estrogen (which is protective for the heart) could be the most likely explanation.
Estrogen has long been thought to be the reason why women have less heart disease than men (until they go through menopause and estrogen levels drop).
But the research team found that estrogen also seems to reduce the number of ACE2 receptors in women.
Of course, you shouldn’t be trying to increase estrogen in men – that only leads to bad outcomes.
Your best strategy is to avoid ever getting the virus and making your body as healthy as possible in case you do.
Wear masks, use hand sanitizer and – as has been drilled into us repeatedly – wash your hands.
