Bone Density Drugs: Bottling a Lie?
Dear Reader,
When you walk into your mainstream doctor’s office, you expect the drugs he dishes out are going to HELP you.
But when it comes to bone density drugs this is not the case.
These drugs are on my never take list. Why? Well, for starters the side effects alone will wreak havoc on your health.
But there’s an even bigger lie hiding in this pill…
Here’s what you need to know.
Just because these drugs “increase bone density” does NOT mean your bones aren’t going to break.
And that, friend, is the problem.
Better bone density doesn’t equal better bones!
See, bone density drugs are called bisphosphonates.
And list of side effects associated with this class of drugs includes: bone and muscle pain, nausea, heartburn, tiredness, low energy, and feeling sick. Worse still, they are hard on your liver and your kidneys.
Now, they do work as advertised and they push minerals (like calcium) into your bone. So when your doc sends you for a bone density scan, these drugs will increase your density.
BUT here’s the real problem:
When we think of bones, we think of bleached brittle bones sitting in a desert. But bones in a living human are NOT the same.
Bones are built on a protein matrix that is “infused” with minerals. They are far, far more flexible than people realize, they can actually BEND under stress and strain.
That is, until you over–pack them with too much calcium and they become hard and brittle.
A recent study, presented at The American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) 2020 Annual Meeting, found just that. Researchers studied almost 5,000 adults over the age of 50 who had experienced a certain type of broken bone (atypical femoral fracture).
They found that 58 percent of older adults who had atypical femoral fracture used bisphosphonates. AND the longer people were on these drugs, the worse their bones were.
After crunching the numbers, the relative risk for atypical femoral fracture was close to 40 times higher with more than 7 years of bisphosphonate use.
If you want to build your bones, then focus on making sure you get some sort of weight–bearing exercise (walking is the best).
Plus, make sure you are eating good quality proteins, taking Vitamin D, C, and K as well as a supplement containing minerals like magnesium, calcium, boron, and chromium.
