“Green Trick” Beats Colon Cancer?!

Dear Reader,

When you hear about the incredible cancer survival stories, colon cancer is RARELY on the list.

The sad part is, it’s one cancer we are seeing more of (especially in younger people).

Colon cancer a has five-year survival rate of only 63 percent (which is not good).

But the good news is, researchers have found that a particular “green trick” might just be the solution to helping you BEAT colon cancer.

Here’s what you need to know.

Having a close family member with colon cancer is certainly a risk factor. And another risk factor is inflammatory bowel disease (which includes Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis).

What do they all have in common? Inflammation.

And the root cause of colon cancer is runaway inflammation in your gut (regardless if you have inflammatory bowel disease).

A new study that appears in the journal iScience, from researchers at the University of South Carolina round a new way to calm the inflammation (and prevent colon cancer!).

The study team investigated THC or tetrahydrocannabinol and its effects on colon cancer.

THC, you may know, is a molecule found in marijuana.

It is the compound that causes you to feel high. While much of the focus of marijuana research has been on CBD (cannabidiol) – which doesn’t make you feel high, THC has its benefits too.

The research team in this study used mice prone to colon cancer and gave half of them THC.  The mice who received THC showed no tumors along with significantly less chronic inflammation in the gut.

The researchers found that THC binds two cannabinoid receptor (called CB2) which are found on immune cells throughout your gastrointestinal system. The CB2 receptors reduce inflammation in your intestines.

By calming down inflammatory pathways with THC, it not only helped the inflammatory bowel disease but also reduces the risk of cancer.

THC is NOT for everyone (some people don’t like the high feeling and it is not available in every state).

If you are looking for other ways to improve your gut health, try the following.

Dr. Scott’s Gut Healing Plan:

  • Probiotics are necessary in our modern world because we don’t eat enough live foods. I like to rotate probiotics to get as many different strains as possible.
  • Turmeric is great for balancing the microflora (bacteria) in your gut. It also helps to calm inflammation (another common feature of IBS).
  • Eating well is another way to keep your gut bacteria healthy. This means keeping sugar low, eating plenty of veggies, and avoiding processed foods whenever possible.
  • Sleep is another important component of both gut health and lowered anxiety. If you have trouble sleeping, try calming herbs, melatonin, and the amino acid theanine.
  • Caffeine can increase anxiety and increase your gut’s motility (leading to loose stools). Keep your coffee, tea, and chocolate use as low as possible.

Make sure you take your vitamins (especially a multivitamin) because people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease lose vitamins if they have loose stools all the time.

P.S. Cannabis has many benefits and can even help fight common colds! Go here to read more about the benefits.
