[COVID-19] Diabetic Drug WORSENS Cases?

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

If you’re diabetic, I bet you’ve become a very cautious person.

There are so many risks to your health besides the disease itself: amputations, blindness, kidney disease, and more.

Unfortunately, now you have something ELSE to worry about.

You see, many diabetes patients are put on a regimen of drugs… and some of them can be just as dangerous as the condition.

And when you add the additional risk of COVID-19 to the mix, it spells disaster.

Because now researchers have discovered that one drug could cause a near-fatal condition.

But if you know what it is, you can rule it out completely.

If you’re a diabetic on medication, chances are you know all about the dangers of diabetic ketoacidosis or DKA. This condition stops your cells from absorbing the glucose they need for energy.  And without enough energy, they can’t function.

It’s no secret that some mainstream drugs – like sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) – can increase your risk of this disease.

Now a new study has uncovered that folks taking an SGLT2i could be in more DANGER.

If you have diabetes, your risk for severe coronavirus infection is among the highest. In fact, many tragic studies have shown that a large number of people who die from COVID-19 had diabetes.

But, being on SGLT2i drugs makes things MUCH worse.

A new study published in The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists Clinical Case Reports found a dramatic increase of EuDKA in people who had COVID-19 and were taking SGLT2i drugs.

In fact, the researchers found five cases of EuDKA at Brigham and Women’s hospital in just 60 days during the spring of 2020.

The hospital team normally has fewer than five cases a YEAR.

One reason for this might be that when diabetics get COVID-19, they stop eating… but they keep taking their drugs. This throws their blood sugar out-of-whack and can cause dangerous reactions, like ketoacidosis.

The study suggests that if you feel sick AND you’re not eating, then stop taking these drugs.

But as always, NEVER stop taking a drug suddenly. If you decide to quit the drug, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor first.

And keep washing your hands, wearing your mask, and staying 6 feet apart.

P.S. Scientists are worried that COVID-19 could be causing this condition as well, even in healthy people. Find out what it is, and how to protect yourself, right here.
