PREVENT Diabetes and Heart Disease… with FAT?! (Wow!)

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

There’s not a doubt your mainstream doc has a thing or two to say about fat.

Mostly that you should AVOID it… and that having too much of it on your body will kill you.

Now, there are some health risks he’s right to be worried about…

But according to a new study diabetes and heart disease shouldn’t be at the top of his list.

Fat has now been proven to help prevent these deadly diseases— but there’s a catch.

I’ll explain it all below.

Researchers have just discovered that people who carry more brown fat could have a much lower risk of getting diabetes and heart disease.

You see, there are two types of fat we carry: white fat and brown fat.

White fat is the fat we are all familiar with—it’s where we store all those extra calories.

Brown fat is totally different. Brown fat burns energy and is one way your body produces heat without shivering. Having more brown fat has MANY benefits.

And brown fat could be the key to preventing disease.

In a new study, scientists started looked at scans done with a special machine called a positron emission tomography or a PET scan.

Researchers pulled information from 52,000 participants and found that those with detectable brown fat were less likely to suffer from heart disease or metabolic conditions like type 2 diabetes.

In fact, having more brown fat:

  • Cuts your risk of diabetes in HALF
  • And lowers your risk of high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, and coronary artery disease.

What’s crazy about this is that even overweight people could still be healthy, as long as they have more brown fat than white.

The scientists in the study were puzzled as to why this is the case, but they surmise it’s because brown fat burns sugar, which may be why participants with more brown fat had lower blood sugar levels.

And other studies have found that people with brown fat burn 15 percent more calories. Even more studies discovered that brown fat may also secrete hormones that help lower blood pressure).

So: how do you increase your brown fat?

First let me say that it may be a chicken and an egg thing: people who are healthier may produce more brown fat. So, make sure you are eating a good healthy low-carb diet.

Other studies show you can increase your brown fat by cold exposure, exercise, and even caffeine.

Exercise and caffeine are pretty straightforward, but to increase your cold exposure try getting out in all types of weather, sleep with your windows open in winter, or (for the really brave) try taking cold showers.

P.S. If you’re predisposed to high blood sugar, a diabetes diagnosis may not be far behind. Thankfully, there’s a vitamin that tames your blood sugar and stops diabetes in its tracks. Find out what it is right here.-
