[LADIES] Live Longer with This 10-Minute Trick
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
When I think of the women I’ve known, strength is the first thing that comes to mind.
Raising children—and helping with grandchildren—and keeping everyone fed and comfortable often falls to women. And I’ve seen firsthand how powerful they can be.
Yet too often women are weak in one area: their health.
And it’s not your fault—you’ve put others before yourself for so long it just becomes habit. It’s easy to forget about your own well-being.
But I have some good news…
I’ve got one 10-minute health trick you need to add to your daily routine.
It’ll not only help you live LONGER, you’ll be rescuing your joints, improving your heart health, and more!
For women, the key to healthy aging is lifting weights.
Selling the idea of lifting weights to men is rarely difficult. I don’t know if it’s because men are smarter or dumber (I’ll let you decide). Either way, when I tell men to lift weights, they do it.
But for women, it can be a bit more difficult. And believe me, I understand why.
One thing I hear a lot from my female patients is that they’re afraid they’ll end up looking like a bodybuilder… but I promise you don’t have to go that far to reap the benefits.
And once you see how vital lifting weights is, you might not care anyways!
Let me show you.
- There’s nothing else that so closely marks how long you’re going to be on the Earth, as well as how much muscle mass you have. People typically lose muscle mass as they age, and this is replaced with fat. The more fat and the less muscle mass you have, the closer you are to death.
- Strong bones. Good bones come from strong muscles. We don’t think about it very often, but the stronger our muscles are, the better our bones are. Lifting weights helps you restore bone mass that you lose as you age.
- Blood sugar. When you lift weights, your muscles burn up stored blood sugar, helping you improve your insulin resistance and lower those out-of-control numbers.
- Weight loss. A pound of muscle burns 30 to 50 calories a day. That may not sound like much, but it really adds up. Building lean body mass can have a huge effect on your fat-burning efforts.
- Lifting weights helps strengthen the neurological signals in your brain, an important part of forming, storing, and recalling memories.
- Weightlifting can reduce your risk of back pain and even help calm arthritis by strengthening your joints. Building muscle helps take pressure off of your joints as well.
Bonus: Weightlifting also improves mood and lowers stress, as well as strengthens your balance and coordination.
Here’s the thing, you don’t actually have to go to the gym to build muscle. There are plenty of body-weight exercises (here’s one set of examples) or exercises you can do with a fewer weights at home.
Start by trying 10 minutes every day and then increase it over time. The key is consistency: do it every day.
