RESTORE Your Sleep… in the Guest Room?
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
Getting a good night’s sleep is one of the most important things you can do for your health.
You wouldn’t try to run your car on an empty tank of gas, so why do that to your body?
Sleep gives you a stronger immune system, boosts your mood, and more.
And during a pandemic, that’s more important than ever.
I’m going to tell you exactly how to RESTORE your sleep and get perfect health.
During these crazy times, we’re all spending too much time at home with the people we love.
And all that closeness can be a little too much for anyone, especially when it comes to sleeping.
So what’s the solution?
It’s something called a sleep divorce.
It doesn’t involve telling your spouse to hit the road, and you’re not going to be drawing up papers at your lawyer’s office… I’m talking about sleeping in separate bedrooms.
It sounds pretty awful at first… after all, sleeping on the couch is reserved for especially bad fights!
But you’d be surprised how normal—and healthy—sleeping in separate bedrooms can be.
According to a 2017 survey from the National Sleep Foundation, almost one in four married couples sleep in separate beds.
And they’re completely happy!
Sleep is just as important for your well-being as getting along with your spouse is. It helps to consolidate memories, rebuild your muscles, and reduce blood pressure and depression.
Of course, poor quality sleep does the opposite: puts you in a foul mood, ruins your patience, and depresses your immune system.
So, what is a sleep divorce?
That is where you sleep in your own room, sleep at your own time, on your own routine.
There are a million reasons a sleep divorce works: people work at different times of the day, some people are morning people and others are night people, some people toss and turn early in the night and others are restless in the morning.
And then there is snoring!
I think everyone has experienced rage when someone’s snoring won’t let you get your 40 winks.
One review in the journal Chronobiology International found that sleeping with someone who snores can have a huge impact on your own sleep quality (no surprise there!).
Spending time with somebody morning to night (even if you love them) can be difficult at times… and getting away at night can really smooth out some of the rough edges.
Sleeping separately is a discussion every couple should have and decide together. Some people like the comfort of having their partner close and others are fine sleeping alone. Decide together what’s best for you both, and soon you can enjoy better health.
P.S. If you struggle with insomnia, every night can feel like a battle. Here’s how to kick it to the curb for good and have peaceful, deep sleep.
