Hidden Fungus Making You Fat!? (Gross)

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

If you’re trying to lose weight, it can feel like the odds are stacked against you.

Especially once you reach a certain age.

Feeling too tired to cook or not being able to afford organic produce and a gym membership can all feel like setbacks.

And though they seem like huge obstacles, they’re all manageable to a degree.

But now researchers have discovered a hidden enemy that can’t be reasoned with.

It’s a secret fungus that could make you fat… and it’s downright disgusting.

When you think about gut health, bacteria get all the microbiome press. If you walk into a store and you’re looking for a supplement to help your microbiome, it’s going to be my collection of mostly bacteria like Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium, and others.

But your microbiome is SO much more than just bacteria.

It’s a collection of many different microorganisms, including fungi, which have their own little mini-kingdom called the mycobiome.

And while we don’t like to think about fungi living in our guts, they do, and they play a vital role in your health.

Researchers recently found that mice with certain types of fungi living in their gut are more likely to gain weight when they eat processed food.

For the study, researchers divided mice into two groups and gave each of them a different diet. One group ate processed foods, and the other ate a normal balanced diet.

Not surprisingly, the mice on the processed food diet gained weight. But there was an important difference…

The weight gain was not the same across the board.

According to the researchers, the mice had varying levels of gut fungi that affected the weight loss. Those who had more Thermomyces (found mostly in processed foods) were more likely to gain 15 percent more weight.

And what about the mice on the normal diet?

They, too, had different weight gain and loss, but on a much smaller scale.

This suggests that certain fungi – as well as what you eat – have a powerful impact on your metabolism.

Currently, you can’t walk into a store and get a fungi probiotic, but you can take care of your digestive tract and make a more hospitable place for the fungi to grow.

Start by eating more fermented foods like yogurt and sauerkraut. You can also help your microbiome flourish by taking a probiotic supplement.
