[WARNING] Can Sunscreen Give You Cancer!?

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

Summer heat is finally here!

That means trips to the beach, the golf course, tennis court, or maybe even to the ballpark to watch a game.

And with all that time outside, you’re probably reaching for the sunscreen to protect your skin.

But wait just a second!

Because researchers have discovered that using sunscreen could give you cancer.

Here’s everything you need to know.

A startling report from online pharmacy Valisure has revealed that 78 different types of sunscreen contain cancer-causing benzene.

Benzene is a petroleum-based solvent used a lot in manufacturing, but it should NEVER be in your body or on your skin.

It’s so toxic that the FDA doesn’t allow it to be put into any products that you might put on your skin. But if it can be justified and it’s under two percent, it can skate by.

And you know exactly why benzene is allowed into sunscreen: it costs less than alternatives.

However, according to the American Cancer Society, benzene has been known to cause leukemia… and for me, that means it should be avoided at all costs.

As I’m sure you know, your skin is the biggest organ in your body… so putting a chemical on your skin means you are absorbing it into your body.

Valisure has begun petitioning the FDA for stronger restrictions… but as is usual with the FDA, that probably won’t go anywhere.

The company tested 300 products and found that 78 contained different levels of benzene—some more than the two percent the FDA allows.

Ironically, those advertising protection against skin cancer also had higher benzene levels.

Sunscreen has made us braver to spend more time out in the sun… more than we probably should.

I’m a big believer in getting outside, breathing fresh air, and, yes—getting sun exposure. There is a ton of evidence that most of us are not getting enough sun to create the vitamin D our bodies need.

But that doesn’t mean you should become a sun worshipper!

Instead, try these simple ways to get the benefits of the sun without harming your skin.

Dr. Scott’s Sun Survival Tips

  • Go outside in the morning or evening – not in the middle of the day.
  • Use sun-blocking strategies: a tent, umbrella, or even sun-blocking clothing is a great choice.
  • Don’t ever burn – a light tan is great for everyone, but don’t stay outside long enough to fry your skin.
  • Choose a natural mineral sunscreen that uses zinc or magnesium to block rays.
  • Make sure you take skin-healthy vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids.
