[MEN] Is This Social Habit Giving You Cancer?

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

There are SO MANY risks to men’s health.

It sometimes seems as if the world is out to get us (and maybe it is!).

Men die much quicker than women, thanks to factors both in our control and outside of it.

And sometimes—admit it, fellas—we’re just darn bad at taking advice from our doctors.

But there’s something that most men don’t think about that may be doing MORE harm than all of the above…

You see, researchers have discovered that THIS bad social habit could give you cancer… and even kill you.

*****

A recent study by the University of Eastern Finland published in journal Psychiatry Research, found that loneliness is associated with a 10 percent increased risk of cancer…

Specifically, for men.

The study was launched in the 1980s with 2,570 middle-aged men who had their health monitored for forty years.

By the end of the study, 24 percent of the participants were diagnosed with cancer… and 11 percent had died from it.

I understand that a 10 percent increased cancer risk may not sound like much, but since cancer is the second leading cause of death, it’s HUGE.

And while this study just looked at men, we’ve seen in the past that women are also harmed from loneliness.

If you asked me how to balance your blood sugar, I’d have a list of action steps you can take.

How do you fix loneliness? That’s more difficult… but it’s not impossible.

Here are a few ideas.

  • The first step is recognizing you have a problem and developing a plan.
  • Then, start by looking into your past and connecting with old friends. Use an online platform like Facebook, or just call some old friends. You’ll be surprised by how many people would love to reconnect.
  • Try joining a group or a club. Pick some sort of activity like golf, bowling, puzzles, card games, stamp collecting or learn something new.
  • Volunteering is my favorite way to banish loneliness. Helping people makes you feel better, and you’ll also be doing some good in the world.
  • Look around your hometown and see where you can become part of the community. It will do you AND your health a lot of good.

Remember—everyone gets lonely at times, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Try one of these suggestions, and you’ll be feeling better (mentally AND physically) in no time.
