[ALERT] “Fat Gene” Myth BUSTED!

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

My patient Andrea has been struggling with weight ever since she can remember.

In fact, some of her earliest memories aren’t of the first time she went to the beach or going to kindergarten… they’re of her parents telling her to eat less.

But when she heard what I had to say about losing weight, her jaw dropped.

You see, researchers have discovered the truth behind the “fat gene” myth you’ve been hearing all of these years.

And it’s mind-blowing…

*****

Researchers have discovered a gene variant on chromosome 16 (called the FTO gene – which stands for Fat Mass and Obesity).

There are two things to know about this gene.

The first is that many people who are overweight DO have this gene… but it doesn’t work how you think.

The gene doesn’t MAKE you fat per se, but it does make you eat more.

And the reason is because of a hormone called ghrelin – which is the hormone that tells you to eat food.

People with the FTO gene have ghrelin that sticks around longer – so they feel hungry longer.

But, as I’ve said many times, a calorie is not a calorie – how many pounds you pack on depends A LOT on THE TYPE of calories you are consuming.

That is because nutrients like fats and protein SQUASH ghrelin, and foods like sugars and carbohydrates have no effect on ghrelin.

If you want to drop weight (even if you have the “fat gene”) then eating more proteins and low starchy veggies is your route out of feeling hungry all the time.

Here are some tips.

Dr. Scott’s Plan for Squashing Ghrelin:

  • Protein. You need to eat protein to feel full and lower your appetite and cravings. Protein easily fills you up and takes more energy to digest than any other types of food. Protein also helps build muscle mass – which pushes your metabolism into overdrive.
  • Be an Amish farmer. University of Maryland researchers concluded that a lifestyle with abundant physical work (like the Amish) is the best for weight loss and maintenance. Choose an exercise you actually like doing and do it frequently.
  • Eat like you’re Italian. The best diet on the planet is called the Mediterranean Diet, which includes fish, poultry, vegetables, nuts, and olive oil. You can make this work for you by including a veggie with every meal and make olive oil your standard oil.
