Forget “Bad” Cholesterol! Get THIS Checked Instead
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
If you’re a longtime reader, you know I’m not a big fan of worrying about your cholesterol levels.
For the most part, the importance of cholesterol levels is overblown and used so drug companies can profit from their statin drugs – which have tons of side effects and do NOTHING to keep you safe.
But that doesn’t mean ALL cholesterol tests are worthless.
In fact, getting this one type of cholesterol test could tell you whether or not you have peripheral artery disease… which leads to heart attack, stroke, and more.
*****
If you’ve never heard of remnant cholesterol then you’re not alone. Chances are your doctor hasn’t heard of it either.
Remnant cholesterol is your “leftover” cholesterol. If you add up your LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol, then subtract that number from your total cholesterol, you get your remnant cholesterol.
And in a new study, researchers discovered just how important this number is when it comes to peripheral artery disease (PAD).
You see, remnant cholesterol is composed of mostly very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) and intermediate-density lipoproteins (IDL).
These particles are dangerous because they’re smaller, which means they are more likely to get caught up in your blood vessels and create a blockage… and before you know it, that can lead to PAD.
Or worse… a stroke.
You haven’t heard of remnant cholesterol mostly because drug companies haven’t figured out a way to make money off of it yet. This is, in part, because VLDL and IDLs are breakdown products of larger molecules and not created by the body, so regular statins wouldn’t work.
But thankfully, you don’t need to wait for a drug.
There are ways to keep your cholesterol within a normal range by simply taking care of yourself and taking the right supplements.
Let me show you how.
- CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10): This antioxidant/enzyme is found throughout our bodies and is used for energy production. Since our heart is one of the most energy-hungry organs in our bodies, it needs CoQ10. But CoQ10 goes beyond that: it can work both inside and outside the cells. CoQ10 has been shown to lower inflammation, reduce blood clots, and help prevent skipped beats like arrhythmias or atrial fibrillation.
- Antioxidants. There are many antioxidants to choose from like vitamins A, C, E, and others, but I prefer the plant phytonutrients such as carotenoids, polyphenols and flavonoids for great antioxidant protection. Look for green tea extract (sometimes labeled as called EGCG or epigallocatechin gallate), red wine extract (resveratrol), Pycnogenol, olive leaf extract, curcumin, and others.
- Hawthorn. This is an herb that has long been used for heart health. It helps lower blood pressure while also strengthening the heart muscle. Hawthorn berries are full of flavonoids for extra antioxidant protection that can help manage your cholesterol.
