Natural Virus Barrier DISCOVERED (Wow!)
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
If this last year (and some change) has taught us anything, it’s that we should all be much more aware of bacteria, viruses, and fungi in our environment.
Our world is more connected than it’s ever been, and nasty bugs can travel fast.
But now scientists are finding new recruits to fight against viruses… and they’ve found a powerful one in the strangest of places.
It’s not a vaccine… and it’s DEFINITELY not an antibiotic.
This natural virus barrier is actually in your body.
*****
Long-time readers know that I love gut health. It’s the foundation of a healthy body and mind.
And now it seems it’s the final frontier for viruses.
You see, a new study has discovered that our microbiome (the collection of healthy bacteria in your gut) both functions as AND strengthens your immune system.
Hundreds of different species of bacteria live in the gut. Those bacteria help ward off viruses by blocking them, attacking them, and by working with the immune system to remove them.
In fact, some bacteria produce toxins called bacteriocins to combat other competing strains of bacteria.
And studies performed in laboratories show bacteriocins can also inhibit the activity of certain viruses.
Streptomycetes bacteria produce a bacteriocin, called duramycin, that works by BLOCKING the West Nile, dengue, and Ebola viruses from entering into their host cells. And other bacteriocins stop the replication of herpes simplex viruses.
While we still have a long way to go to define the specific species which help fight specific viruses or other bacteria, we’re getting there…
But for now, your best bet is to have the healthiest microbiome you can have.
How do you do that?
Let me show you.
Dr. Scott’s Gut Health Program:
- Probiotics are your easiest path to a healthy digestive system. I prefer a probiotic product that contains a fiber prebiotic along with good bacteria.
- Eat enough fiber to not only help with regular bowel movements, but to also help stimulate healthy bacterial growth. I always suggest people choose both water-soluble and water-insoluble fiber. One of my favorite fibers is ground flax seeds.
- Throw away junk food, trans fats, processed, and chemical foods. All processed foods, trans fatty acids, artificial sweeteners, and alcohol harm gut bacteria. Do what you can to limit these non-foods in your diet.
- Exercise doesn’t seem like the first place you would turn to help your digestive tract, but it has been shown to help encourage a healthy microbiome.
Your gut health is more important than we ever realized, and it may be our key to keeping viruses out of our lives.
Make sure you arm it with what it needs.
