5 Herbs to SOOTHE Your Sore Muscles (Easy!)
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
If you’re anything like me, you sometimes overdo it when you’re active, whether it’s weeding the garden, hiking in the hills, or even just cleaning out the garage.
Then the next thing you know, you’re waking up with muscles so sore and stiff you’re lurching around like Frankenstein!
But before you reach for aspirin or Tylenol, let me tell you there’s a much better way.
These five herbs can SOOTHE your worst muscle pain.
Best of all, you won’t have to worry about horrible side effects or addiction.

Before you start taking anything, however, it’s important to get to the ROOT cause of your pain.
A lot of mainstream doctors will tell you the pain you’re feeling is due to lactic acid, but it’s not. Humans do NOT produce lactic acid.
That pain you are feeling is mostly due to microscopic tears in the muscle. And while this sounds like a bad thing, it’s actually a good thing… this is one of the ways your body builds muscle.
But just because it’s natural, and even helpful, it doesn’t mean you have to put up with the pain.
So, let’s talk about those pain-relieving herbs!
- Turmeric is one of your best tools for controlling inflammation, stiffness, and pain thanks to its powerful antioxidant properties. Turmeric and its extract curcumin, are incredibly popular and found in many different products. As I am writing this, I’m drinking a chai tea that has ginger and turmeric in it (and it’s delicious!).
- Chamomile isn’t just good at helping you fall asleep. This herb can also calm down muscle spasms and help with inflammation and swelling.
- Devil’s Claw is found in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa. In one study of folks with joint or lower back pain, up to 70 percent saw relief.
- Cannabidiol (CBD) is an extract from the cannabis plant. It’s so effective at dropping pain and inflammation that it’s being touted as the fix for our opioid crisis. And indeed, in a study conducted in my home state of Colorado (where marijuana has been legal for a few years now), opioid use is plummeting. Don’t worry, you won’t get “high” from CBD—all psychoactive components are removed during processing.
- Arnica has long been used to relive pain in joints and muscle pain. This herb is only to be used on the skin and is not to be taken internally.
And if you’re looking for immediate relief, ice is your best friend whenever you have muscle pain. Use ice for 10-15 minutes wherever it hurts and do that as often as you can.
