Most Seniors Missing These Vital Vitamins (Scary)
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
The sad truth is, most Americans aren’t getting the nutrients they need.
The typical American diet is downright shameful, and most folks eat so much high fructose corn syrup it’s basically a food group!
But now the issue has become even more dire.
Researchers have found that most seniors are missing two vital vitamins… and this could lead to Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and more.
Here’s how to know if you’re at risk.
*****
Recent studies show that vitamins D and B12 are among the most common deficiencies, particularly in seniors.
Let’s take a closer look.
Vitamin B12
This vitamin is essential for proper nerve function. That means every nerve in your body needs this vitamin to work well.
And you know where a lot of nerves are in your body? Your brain.
If you don’t get enough vitamin B12, you’re more prone to depression, dementia, and decreased cognitive function.
Vitamin B12 is also needed to build red blood cells which carry oxygen around in your body.
People with low B12 are in for a double whammy when it comes to their brains. First, they’re not getting enough oxygen from the loss of red blood cells, and then the nerves in their brain could deteriorate as well!
There’s another reason you could be deficient in B12. We need strong stomach acid in order to absorb B12… and stomach acid strength DROPS as we get older. People who take antacids, acid-blockers, or who’ve had stomach bypass surgery are especially at risk.
Make sure you get enough of this vitamin by supplementing. In fact, add a B-Complex (which contains all the B vitamins) to your daily routine to really notice a difference.
Vitamin D
Look at any mainstream medical website, and it’ll tell you something like “10 to 15 minutes in the direct sun a few days a week can give you most of the vitamin D your body needs.”
I hate to tell you this, but that is bunk.
Yes, vitamin D is produced when sunlight hits our skin, but that 10-15 minutes is not enough. It’s such a low standard that almost anyone can do it – and, yet, most people are VERY DEFICIENT in vitamin D.
We don’t get enough vitamin D is because we spend so much time inside and cover ourselves when we are outside.
And as with vitamin B12 deficiency, age is working against you. Once you reach your golden years, your ability to make vitamin D drops drastically. For older folks, your ability to make vitamin D is about half of what it was at age 20.
We need vitamin D to maintain a healthy immune system, to make our bones and muscles strong, and to protect us from cognitive decline. Not only that, vitamin D is crucial in preventing diabetes and high blood pressure.
Find a good quality vitamin D3 and supplement all year round. If you’re under 70, aim for 600IU daily. If you’re over 70, make sure you’re getting 800 to 1000IU.
