Mailbag! Say GOODBYE to Cluster Headaches

I suffer from painful cluster headaches. Any information you have on this would be much appreciated.

Wilma,

While many people know about migraines, not that many know about cluster headaches. And that’s a good thing… because people who suffer from them describe the pain as a hot poker being shoved through their eye and brain.

It’s awful!

But even worse is the “cluster” itself. These headaches may attack for weeks at a time only to disappear for a while.

It’s not all bad news, however. There are several easy ways to get your cluster headaches under control.

The number one treatment for cluster headaches is magnesium. It’s very common for people with cluster headaches to be magnesium-deficient.

To make sure you’re getting enough magnesium, first make sure you’re not taking something that robs your body of magnesium. You can search your medications online to see if they reduce your magnesium, but the primary drugs that can deplete magnesium levels are acid-blockers, diuretics, and steroids.

Then, make sure you’re eating magnesium-rich foods like almonds, black beans, avocado, and spinach. Another great way to get magnesium is from Epsom salt baths because you can absorb it through your skin.

But because it’s so important, I suggest you take supplemental magnesium. I prefer magnesium that’s in an amino acid chelate… this simply means magnesium combined with a protein. Common chelated forms include magnesium glycinate and magnesium lysinate.

Next, you need to make sure you’re getting enough B vitamins. Vitamin B2 has specifically been studied for cluster headaches but getting a good B-complex that contains many of the B vitamins is what I usually suggest.

Melatonin is usually used for help with sleep, but it, too, is a great tool to prevent cluster headaches.

I also like Kudzu extract – yes, the vine that grows like crazy in the South. The extract has been studied for preventing cluster headaches and appears to work very well.

As you can see, there are many natural ways to prevent cluster headaches. I hope that one of these works for you.
