BOOST Your Brain Health in 1 Easy Step

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

There is a path that people typically take as they age… and if you listen to the mainstream, they’ll tell you EVERYONE is doomed to tread it.

It goes something like this: at first, you forget where you put the keys… then you stop remembering people’s names… and soon you can’t dress or feed yourself….

Suddenly, you have dementia.

But this doesn’t have to be you. After all, you’re not helpless yet!

And as I always say, if you don’t want typical results, then don’t be typical.

Now you can BOOST your brain health in one easy step…

You just have to take the path less traveled.

*****

The answer to keeping away dementia lies at the end of a pathway through the woods… or the end of a loop around your neighborhood.

I’m talking about walking.

I probably don’t have to sell you too hard on walking. It helps manage conditions from high blood pressure to joint pain and poor blood sugar control.

And if you take that walk somewhere outside, that’s when you REVITALIZE your brain health.

Researchers writing in the World Journal of Biological Psychiatry found that people who regularly got outside in the fresh air had much more gray matter in their brains.

Their study examined the brain health of six, middle-aged city dwellers to see what effect this daily exercise had on their brains.

And they found that over time, the gray matter in their brains GREW.

If you want to keep your wits about you as you age, keeping your gray matter matters… a lot.

The researchers found that outside walking increased gray matter in the right dorsolateral-prefrontal cortex. This outer part of the brain is involved in the planning and regulation of actions. It is also the seat of cognitive control, where your brain processes information and controls your personality.

But what makes walking outside such an important factor?

You see, walking outside comes with obstacles. The ground you walk on is uneven and unpredictable. Your brain has to adapt quickly to navigate your path successfully.

Your home, however, is filled with known things like the couch, those trinkets… things that haven’t moved in years. Your brain has memorized the layout.

Outside, things are constantly changing. The colors outside are deeper and more varied. The air is certainly much better.

All of this adds up to more stimulation, which is what stimulates your gray matter.

So, slip on your walking shoes and head out the door – your brain will love you for it!
